WARMING UP THE ENGINES FOR SEASON 3, CLUB CHALLENGE MIDDLE EAST
Al Tayer Motors’ Track Day
The official dealer of Ferrari UAE – Al Tayer Motors – decided to bring the Passionate Ferraristi back on track just after the summer break and ahead of Season 3, Passione Ferrari Club Challenge Middle East. A truly dedicated track day at Dubai Autodrome, along with unmistakable Italian hospitality, was reserved for its Ferrari owners and their family and friends. More than sixty members joined the private occasion, gathered within the Dragon Racing pit garages, where guests could learn more about the latest Ferrari road and race cars.
Lined up at the front of the pit garages was the beautiful Ferrari 296GTB, with its mid-mounted turbocharged V6 engine coupled with a plug-in electric motor with 830hp; the SF90 Stradale, the first series-production supercar with a plug-in hybrid architecture; the Ferrari F8 Tributo, an iconic mid-engined turbocharged V8 Berlinetta; and last but not least the Ferrari 488 GTB, a V8 which marks a return to the classic Ferrari model designation.
The rumbling noise of the Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo race cars greeted guests and media – five customer racecars and one Al Tayer Motors, providing test drives for prospect customers.
The Dragon Racing technical team was on hand throughout the event to manage the 488 EVO Challenge fleet, providing performance analysis of the vehicle to ensure the cars were run at their optimum at all times. The crew of Dragon Racing instructors also accompanied the drivers while out on circuit to enhance their driving performance along with providing the test drive experience every new Ferrari owner desires.
A successful “Essere Ferrari” day in the UAE and especially enjoyed on our home-based track, Dubai Autodrome, marking the start of our 2022-23 season.
SEASON 3 – CLUB CHALLENGE MIDDLE EAST, ROUND 1
Round 1 – Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi
A busy second week of October arose for the Dragon Team – beginning with the iconic “Dragon Test Days”, proudly held each Thursday at both local race tracks and followed by an intense Friday-preparation day, which united the team under a shared focus: putting together the biggest Ferrari Club Challenge Middle East round, to date!
On Saturday, 15th October – The Ferraristi were invited to the Official UAE dealer, Al Tayer Motors Dubai Showroom to undertake an enviable parade to Yas Marina Circuit – for Ferrari cars and owners only.
At the entrance of Yas Marina Circuit, marshals greeted the head-turning pack, including some of the most iconic cars, such as the Ferrari SP1 and SP2 Monza (a limited edition car created as part of the ICONA range). These ICONA owners enjoyed a dedicated track session during the Passione Ferrari event and proudly led the Ferrari Owners parade with the stunning Rossa Corsa La Ferrari.
Meanwhile, in the pit garages of Yas Marina Circuit, the lights switched on and the pit box doors opened up for a jaw-dropping sight. A total of 19 Ferrari, 730HP, 488 Challenge Evo race cars, beautifully lined up and showcasing unique liveries that the owners had designed ahead of the new season. As the lights went green the owners took to the circuit to prepare themselves in advance of the closing Super Pole session on Sunday night.
Dragon instructors were involved in both race and road activities. Road car instructors interchanged between driver and passenger seats to allow future owners to test the speed and performance of the 296GTB. Race car instructors focused on maximising the driver’s skills through a personalised coaching plan, to ensure they lap safely and consistently.
As is tradition, the two-day event concluded with the Awards Ceremony, where contenders were awarded with the titles of Fastest Time Lap during Super Pole, Most Laps, Most Improved and Driver of the Weekend.
The Dragon Racing Team would like to give a special thanks to Ferrari Middle East and their partner CANOSSA Events, for allowing us to be an integral part of this special event which was by far the biggest and best Passione Ferrari that’s ever taken place in the GCC.

Race Weekend 1 | 26-29 January 2023 | Dubai Autodrome
Our new race season is a few weeks away from starting, the F1 season is drawing to a close and before the busy period kicks off I would like to take this opportunity to respond to the many messages sent to me by both friends, valued clients and even distant acquaintances, over the last few months.
Many of you have posed some quite tough questions and others have asked for opinions on some quite topical racing issues and I am extremely flattered to be approached on them and although I definitely am no expert I do have an opinion on them – there were too many to detail here so I will choose just a few which I hope will be of interest.
THE “CONTROVERSIAL FINALE” IN ABU DHABI IN 2021 – GIVING MAX HIS FIRST F1 CHAMPIONSHIP
I choose this one as the final outcome is still being debated and there could possibly be some comparisons made to the final 4 laps at Monza in September.
I was at the Abu Dhabi GP in 2021 and there can be no doubt that on the day, Lewis outdrove Max.
Based on my understanding of the rules all lapped cars should have unlapped themselves not just the 4 between Lewis and Max – should all the lapped cars been called through then the end result would be in doubt probably in favour of Lewis as to overtake after the back straight at Yas is nigh on impossible even for Max.
If the Massi decision was correct then the FIA would hardly have fired him so that in itself is an admission that his was the wrong decision.
It would not have been right to retroactively strip Max of the title so in my view they should have awarded the championship to both of them jointly – a difficult decision but a Solomonic one that would have been fair and should have appeased everyone.
NAOMI SCHIFF AT SKY SPORTS F1
Lewis Hamilton’s endorsement of her and his statement that she was qualified to present at F1 events sparked a rash of comments questioning this statement.
Having researched her racing career in further detail, it is evident that Naomi may not have set the world alight, but championship wins in Clio Cup, Podiums at the Nurburgring 24Hrs and qualifying for the inaugural W Series shows that her talents are not limited to being in front of the camera.
I, sadly, don’t know enough to voice an opinion on her technical capabilities nor how that should translate into her role but from her presentations, this season she comes across as a well-spoken and very eloquent lady – the occasions I followed her she did not cover great technical detail on the drivers nor the cars but her content was of interest to stay tuned – in her favor, is the fact that she was brought up in South Africa, my home country.
GRID PENALTIES FOR ENGINE AND GEARBOX ADDITIONS
This topic has prompted the largest volume of questions (and criticisms), particularly since the last 2 races at Spa and Monza. What cannot be contested is that the best drivers in the best cars can win easily even after starting from the back of the grid and the top 6 cars and drivers can get into the top 6 places no matter where they start from. That implies the penalty system is weak and will not work fairly for the lesser teams.
The top 3 teams Red Bull/Ferrari/Mercedes run their own engines – Honda/ Ferrari/ Mercedes – they are in a class of their own.
The next 3 teams Alpine /McLaren/Alfa Romeo also all run different engines – Renault/ Mercedes/ Ferrari – way behind the first 3 and well ahead of the last 4.
The final 4 teams run Mercedes /Honda/ Ferrari engines.
It’s the package of engine, car, and driver with the latter 2 clearly making up the majority of the superiority of the package (as all engines in all teams are the same).
One has to pose the question – if the penalties were more severe would the top teams reduce power to extend engine life and thereby equalizing the top 3 with the mid 3 teams? The current grid penalty system does not work so surely other options need to be explored.
With the cost caps imposed, do the teams get to choose what they spend their budgets on (more engines and gearboxes meaning other savings need to be made in other areas)? Frankly, there is not enough transparency around the cost caps and only this weekend in Singapore has the controversial subject of cost caps been a serious focus. Targets for each team should be published and the F1 website should detail spending after every so many races.
If caps are exceeded what penalties get applied? Theoretically, top teams could take new engines every second race and still win from the back of the grid.
Were this my show I would do the following: I would introduce a points system for qualifying – if any car takes on a new engine over quota they are not allowed to qualify for that race. That car should then start the race from the pitlane with their tire quota reduced accordingly. If more than one pitlane starter then the lap times of FP3 to determine the order in the pitlane. Then I would apply a penalty of just point deductions. The first engine gets light point deduction, the second heavier and the third substantial and all have to start from the pit lane. F1 has the financial wherewithal to employ actuaries who could finitely compute what point deductions are both fair and practical.
It does appear that the new F1 owners and management are more proactive in seeking solutions that will be in the public’s best viewing interest and are more open to change than the old regime -so let’s hope for next season we see some changes for the better.
Coincidently a friend recently sent me this: An opinion is information plus experience Ignorance is an opinion lacking information Stupidity is an opinion that ignores the facts
You be the judge.
That’s all for now -wishing all our valued friends and racers a great 2022/2023 season.
Whilst our racing activities ended in June there was no respite for Dragon as we set about our summer repair and maintenance programs. As has become tradition, Dragon’s own fleet was the first to be tackled – our Ferrari 488 Challenge EVO enjoying a full rebuild, our Mercedes GT4s receiving their upgrades, and 2 of our McLaren GT Sprints receiving full engine rebuilds.
Our CEO then spent time with the Challenge owners whose components in some of the cars were out of life and needed replacing or rebuilding – these will be completed in September ready for the new season of Passione Ferrari: Club Challenge Middle East.
The Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo is a complex racing machine. Just like a surgeon operating on an open heart, the strip down and re-build of the car requires skilled and knowledgeable hands, as well as patience and perseverance. With race cars having a specific maintenance schedule to be adhered to, our fleet and customer race cars undergo a rebuild in accordance with the parts replacement or rebuild as per the recommended schedule.
The fuel cell, which has a validity of 5 years from the date of manufacture, has completed rigorous tests and re-certification back at its original manufacturer in the UK. This now gives the existing fuel cell a further 2 years of validity before it needs to be replaced.
Finally, all of the suspension components, water cooling system, engine ancillaries, electrical wiring, braking, and steering system are inspected and rebuilt ready for the busy 2022-2023 season.
A rare find – The Porsche 964 Turbo S Flachbau
From a race car to a rare car, the workshop has been full of impressive automobiles during the summer break.
For true car enthusiasts, this might just be the most beautiful find.
This Limited Edition Porsche 964 Turbo S Flachbau is one of 76 original chassis hand-built in Stuttgart. Its uniqueness is down to the car’s front end design – the “Flat Nose” which was unique to this car and a rare find in the Middle East. This low mileage and beautiful example was originally delivered to the GCC and has remained here since.
Of the 76 models available, the owner of one of the rarest Porsche in the world has entrusted Dragon as the preferred company to bring this Porsche back to its former self and make the vehicle road worthy once again.
After many years in storage, the vehicle has undergone extensive inspections and servicing with parts sourced from across the world for this rare vehicle. The car will soon undergo an RTA inspection ready to hit the streets of the UAE this Autumn.
More Power For the 800PS McLaren Senna…
The McLaren Senna, the most track-focused legal road car ever built by McLaren is fitted with a mighty 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. Weighing less than 1200kg, with 800PS and 800Kg of downforce, it’s the fastest McLaren road car to date.
With its carbon fibre bodywork and Alcantara be-spoke blue interiors, it is difficult not to miss this wonderful example on the street or track!
Upon arriving at the Dragon’s workshop, the Senna has been stripped down by our technicians to undergo a Stage 3 power upgrade, as requested by its owner. With uprated turbos, bespoke charge coolers, lightweight upgraded Inconel exhaust system this Senna will certainly have the performance to match its aggressive styling.
Remapping of the ECU (Engine Control Unit) will be completed once the upgrades are complete, along with routine servicing and Dragon enhanced inspection of the vehicle components. This Senna will be well over 900PS once the upgrades are completed!
